Michael's Hair Cut

He really did it! We cut his hair off last night (2/22/04). He's had long hair for 16 years, and now it's all gone.

Before really starting we decided to take a before picture or two with all three of us here. Including the "Worlds Largest Comb Over" (right)

To give this some feeling of ceremony Michael decided we should all wear sarongs.

This is the part where we tortured Michael by petting him and asking him if he *really* wanted to cut his hair? We had to be sure.

He said he was sure, so the next step was to braid his hair. He was okay with this part.

But then I asked him for the scissors and told him "This is it." and he snatched them back. And we had a little episode wherein he gave me the scissors and took them back a couple times, and started to freak out, but then pulled himself together (with a little help from Punzel and me).

And then the cutting started.

Punzel did okay because she was taking the pictures, and I was okay here because I was doing the cutting. We had our jobs.

(I recall the last time I cut my hair off, I was 10, and my mom took pictures the whole time, because, she said, it was the only way she was going to keep from crying the whole time.)

But Michael just got to sit there, and I think it was a bit traumatic for him.

As soon as I was done cutting the braid off I handed it to him, and that was really hard.

But he seemed to recover quickly.

Then of course I needed to use the electric clippers to make it all even. Or at least as even as I could.

You see, there were a couple spots on the back where I cut a little too close with the scissors. But I'm told it'll grow out fast.

More ceremony. He wanted us all to have a drink afterwards. He's sipping rum, but we opted for juice.

I think I did a good job. I cried a little later that night, but not a lot. I'll miss it.

We video taped the whole thing and Punzel took about 200 pictures. I don't plan to post all of them, but I suspect I will get a good selection up here tonight. Stay tuned.
