Day at Folklife 2003

Folklife: May 25th, 2003. Yep it's that time again. Summer must be upon us already. I'm not sure what happened to the Spring, it's a blur for me. I spent about 3 hours down at the Seattle Center at the festival today and pretty much wore myself out. I might go back tomorrow. I'm not sure yet. This year I noticed that there was a maritime theme. (I've never noticed a theme at Folklife before.) So the Center for Wooden Boats had a big presence with displays scattered about. There were other folks too, but I saw CWB signs on several tents. I was glad to see my friend Pete and the Toucans return this year. Missed 'em last year. New found curiosity was Pepper and Andrew, more about them and a variety of other things below.

The Toucans

Click here for a 30 second video clip of the Toucans (.AVI).

I've been listening to, watching and photographing the Toucans for about ten years now. I may even get some older pictures scanned and up here eventually. I think it will be fun to see how the guys have changed over the years. The current line up, as seen here, consists of Pete and Rob in front and Steve and Dave in back. And the fifth Toucan, Margaret. I think she has been selling CDs and helping collect tips and pass out flyers for as longs as I've been going to see them. (Below we have Pete, Rob, Dave and Margaret. The close up I took of Steve came out blurry so I tossed it. Oops, Sorry.)

Pepper & Andrew

Pepper is the guy in the white t-shirt and Andrew is the one in the kilt. First Pepper escaped from a straight jacket, but I didn't get any pictures of that. Wish I had. Maybe next year, or tomorrow if I go back. In the pictures above we see 1) Andrew fussing over the bed of nails, 2) Him lying on the bed of nails with a cinderblock on his chest while Pepper takes a practice swing, 3) Pepper crushing the cinderblock with the sledgehammer, and 4) a shot of Andrews back *ouch* and Peppers face. I think we've got a couple of young masochists having fun here.

(My Evil Twin, Mali, took lots more pictures of these guys then I did: http://www.angelfire.com/wa/malikins2/sideshow.html)

A variety of other things:

Hammered Dulcilmer (TY Bomb Guy)

CWB display

Saw as musical instrument

Mimes who play music. They would pause and pose every so often.

These folks were having fun. Very energetic.

The required shot of the Space Needle.

This is brand new. I haven't watched the construction very closely so it's hard for me to recall exactly what it looked like before in comparison.

One last wooden boat display before heading home.
