Concrete Blonde In Portland, OR

Jan. 29th, 2002

We went to see Concrete Blonde perform at the Roseland Theater in Portland, OR.

Leaving work at about 3:30 pm to get everything packed up that we would need for the evening. We were a little scared of what the weather might do. There had been more snow predicted, and it's hard to tell how bad it might get, and we have to be back in the morning. I was a bit terrified of getting stuck somewhere between Seattle and Portland. We decided to go anyway.

On the road by about 4 pm. Rush hour(s) traffic out of Seattle was lame but we picked up some time somewhere because we got to Portland by 7:15 pm. Found cheap parking three blocks away from the theater.

Opening act started promptly at 8 pm. Johnette came out to personally introduce them as her friends and mentors. Mojocar, a Flamenco group, consists of Katarina the dancer, Steve the song writer and guitar player, and Fernando who was playing a variety of percussion instruments. Little hand drums and the wooden box upon which he sat, etc...

Their performance was good, but we had to view and hear it over a woman in front of us who found it boring and decided to have a loud conversation that we all had to hear. Michael very politely asked her to try to keep it down. She was offended, but she shut up and left to get another drink. Then her friends apologized for her.
