Movie Reviews

Movies at the Theatre

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
Lots of hype, and I think they did their best, but it just doesn't live up to the book. I suppose it was destined to fall short, since they all do. The visuals are marvelous, and the acting is superb, but even being two and a half hours long wasn't enough. I might recommend that you see the movie first if you haven't read it yet, just because it seems to me that you will get to enjoy the movie, since you won't know what is missing and then read the book to fill in all the juicy details. On the other hand there is an arguement for getting to read the book without knowing the outcome. I suspect there isn't any harm in seeing the movie first, especially if you have made it through all of the hype over the last few years without reading.

Happy Accidents
Very good film! I highly recommend it. Of course it is probably gone from the theatres by now. Put it on your list for future rentals and wait for it. Time travel and the modern screwed up relationship collide in this film. Marisa Tomei and Vincent D'Onofrio both put in amazing performances. As a time traveler piece it isn't perfect (imho) but they must do everything else right, because I loved it. Well thought out plot, and it has lots of fun little twistes and turns.

Planet of the Apes (2001)
If it wasn't for Helena Bonham Carter this movie would have been a complete waste of time. Lots of good actors, some good acting, and at least they pay homage to the original, but the plot was tissue paper thin and had lots of problems. I'm not the sort to waste my time listing the faults of others so I will just leave it at that.

Movies On Video or DVD

Mallrats
I really enjoy Kevin Smith's movies. I think he is a funny guy. It took me awhile to see this one. Can't remember why, but I've watched it on video two or three times now and it still makes me laugh a lot.
