Coffee/Corporate Rant
Added 9/6/01. This is on the front page of the Seattle P-I today.
Coffee Messiah standing its grounds against big chain
I work within a couple blocks of these two coffee shops, and if I drank coffee, I know where I'd go. As it is I might start stopping in at Coffee Messiah once in awhile for something else, hot cider and a pastry, just to put my money where my mouth is. I am guilty of buying something (all be it at least 5 years ago now) at Starbucks once and I think I have penance to make.
P.S. In The Stranger today it is reported that the resident cat of Coffee Messiah is running for Mayor of Seattle.

Since it's a Coffee Messiah themed day here, I thought I might as well link to their website.
And if you'd like to hear some people rant on the topic, Seattle.IndyMedia.org has a good one going on the topic of 'Coffee Messiah vs. Starbucks', which degenerates into a common rant about the 'small locally owned store vs. the corporate chain'. I think what's really sad is that most folks will think its a real shame that David doesn't seem to have a chance against Goliath, but they don't bother to make the leap of logic that concludes this is because they don't bother to patronize there own neighborhood stores. Instead they opt for the long drive to the mall over a walk in their own neighborhood. I've seen too many video stores and coffee houses go out of business when a chain store moves in a block away. The chains do it on purpose and it works. Why? Because too many people are sheep, and a corporate logo in neon is like a shepherd they are compelled to follow. |
